New Snowfall Records

It has been the winter of a generation. Today’s spring snow shattered a record in Fort Smith. It was the most snow ever to fall in the month of March at 7″. It broke the previous record that was set back in 1968.

The record for the snowiest March did not break in Northwest Arkansas. In fact the super snowstorm of March 10-11, 1968 put down a foot and a half of snow while drifts buried some vehicles.

With that said another big snowfall record was reached today. The most snow ever to fall on northwest Arkansas in a single winter season was 25″ set back in 1977-78. Or at least that was before today. The latest snowfall brings NWA’s seasonal snowfall total to 25″ as well for the entire season, which is the most ever recorded.

The river valley reached its 3rd highest seasonal snowfall total on record at 18″.

To sum it all up this winter was the snowiest and 5th coldest winter on record in Northwest Arkansas. It was the 3rd snowiest and 13th coldest winter on record in the river valley. We made it through everyone…happy spring 🙂

  1. Hi, I’m just wondering how the seasonal totals are done. Do you add up a bunch of different areas in the NWA area to get totals. I figured what with 12″ in most places seasonal total would be more like 29″, as you stated before that we had 17″ up to now. Just curious 🙂 Thanks, Marie

  2. Marie,

These are the unofficial numbers…the totals may be higher. We will post another winter recap blog at some point late this week or early next week.

  3. I guess it all depends on where you live? Because 2003 my son and I kept track of every snowfall and tallied 39″.
